RVs have some pretty complicated parts and components that often need a lot of care and maintenance. As a result, it’s common for RV owners to try and DIY their rig’s various maintenance services and repairs to try and save a little extra time and money. However, while at-home repairs are doable, it’s important to know when a maintenance task requires an expert set of hands. To learn when it is and isn’t okay to try and DIY your RV’s maintenance, check out our advice below.

Do You Have the Right Tools?

Despite what you may initially assume, at-home RV repairs aren’t always the more affordable options when compared to professional maintenance services. While you may not have to cover the cost of labor with an at-home repair, if your RV’s service is rather complicated you’ll have to purchase a wide variety of new tools for the job.

The cost of tools and parts will vary quite a bit depending on the job at hand and the equipment you’re missing. To make sure you’re not spending more than you should, we recommend preparing a general estimate of how much tools and parts may cost for an at-home repair, and then directly comparing it to a quote from a nearby RV service center.

Do You Have the Necessary Experience?

While there is tons of helpful information online on how to complete various RV repairs and maintenance, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have the skills to complete the job. Video tutorials and guides can often make even complicated RV repairs seem simple, leading owners inexperienced with RV maintenance to take on tasks far beyond their skillset. Before you dive headfirst into a repair, be sure to do plenty of research beforehand. If you’re unfamiliar with the tools, compliments, or area of the RV where the work is being done, an at-home repair may not be the best idea.
